Bear in Wellbore

Big Sea Lion at Green Point Rapids

– Slept in.  Sunny and warm.  Left Douglas Bay in Forward Harbour and heading south on Wellbore.  Bucking the tide and there are lots of whirlpools.  Black bear flipping rocks for crabs on the beach.  East to the Green Point Rapids and working all the back eddies to get 7knts.  Two large log tows heading in the same direction.  Large sea lion came up right in front of us with huge salmon. Heading to Phillips Arm.  Secured to old logging dock for the night.

Overcast.  Said “farewell” to Ken on “Kenneth Colonel” and Patrick on “Spirit” (whom we have met several times on this trip).  Left a little earlier than we need for “Ladner Lass” to make slack at Seymour Narrows, so we both went into the back of Port Neville.  It’s a fairly deep channel with a logging show at the end.  At the opening there is a government dock and post office that has been run by the same family for over a century.  Also there are more pictographs along the way.  The weather turned sunny and we took Sunderland to anchor in Forward Harbour and Jamie & Marko have gone on to Campbell River.  First time on our own this trip.  Miss all of our friends and family, we had a great trip with them..

The weather has really changed from yesterday.  It’s raining. Maybe it’s because we launch our motorbike.  I’ll check out their store and get some fresh baked goods. Gail has groceries, hardware and a gift shop with lots of goodies.  Forget the rain we went two miles on a trail until we couldn’t go any further.  Only had one minor crash.  All is okay, Back in time for hamburgers at the restaurant, and to Marko & Jamie’s for a game of cards.

Boat that Didn't Make It

Overcast, but clearing.  Prawning.  Jim having Nobeltec problems on his computer.  Sean back to making bread, pies and cinnamon buns, which she sells to us boaters.  Very good.  Tracy and Mike in charge of the pancakes.  We are heading passed Echo Bay and south toward Port Harvey.  Very warm on Knight Inlet, going with the wind and the current.  Some selective logging.  Followed the markers in Chatham Channel.  (It’s a channel that you have to stay in the range in order to stay afloat and there’s still not much water under you keel.) On our way we saw ducks, pictographs, and midden beaches (shell piles from earlier Indian habitation).  George and Gail tied us up at their Port Hardy Marine Resort.  Jamie and I launched the kayaks and went over to a nearby midden.  It was the sight of a centuries old Indian village called Matilpi.  Back for a great feed of fish & chips and a bottle of wine at the resort.

It’s raining.  Pancakes again. Lots of indoor chores to do.  Bought a couple of water colours at Lorne Shantz art show here at Shawl Bay.  Weather cleared.  “Black Tie” here.  Happy hour is always lots of fun.  Dinner on “Ladner Lass”.

Another beautiful day.  Goodbye Allyson and heading back to Shawl Bay with “Ladner Lass”.  Whale rose right in front of us in the Stuart narrows.  Not sure who was more frightened him or us?  We all sat around and enjoyed the sun.  Les on “Sun Breeze” caught us up on the saga of the Broughtons.  Great dinner on Marko and Jamie’s then we went for a gunk in “Peaire” and had a fabulous whale show right out front.

Very Busy at Jennis Bay

The War Canoe “Welcome” now hangs in the main guest seating area.  Shawn, Loren, Mike and our Gail all going to Pt Hardy.  “Shaman”  “Over the Edge” will start heading south tomorrow morning.  Good prawning in Moore Bay.  Headed for Jennis Bay to meet up with Jamie & Marko and Cajun night. Lots of dolphins dancing for us on the way there.  Jennis is a very busy place, boats are all rafted, and several like us anchored out.  Allyson’s last Cajun Night.  She supplies the Cajun part and everyone brings a side dish. Great time had by all.  David made her a wooden keep and take south with her when she leaves.  Had chats with owners of “Deer Leap”, “Nimpkish” and “Walronda” also here.
